Cleaning up a Flooded Basement is not so Hard to Do

Due to storm gutters and downspouts clogged or plagued with holes, our basements are suddenly flooded with water that at first we even have no idea where all the water came from.

Cleaning, repairing and restoring your flooded basement can be as easy as 1, 2, and 3. Here’s how.

For starters, the first thing that you should do is to remove the water. If the flood is just a minor one, then you could mop the water away with maybe a durable mop or an old towel. But if the flooding is a bit like a pond already, then it might be high time to invest on various big weapons already.

For your own safety and convenience, it is advisable to store a portable sump pump, wet vacuum or wet shop vacuum, inside your house.

But before jumping into compulsive buying and availing all of these, you must first consider if there is a ready and safe outlet ready for your sump pump’s flooded basement operations.

Also, keep draining in mind. How can you drain your flooded basement if you have no existing drainage system in your basement? Maybe you need to obtain a long hose to be attached to the sump pump which you can hang out the window and as far away from the house as possible.

If you will purchase the wet vacuum, realize that it will only be a matter of minutes before you have to empty the holding receptacle. On the other hand, the wet shop vacuum will hold more water, but on the downside, it will be heavier and more difficult to empty, especially if you are trying to empty the water outside of the home.

Once everything’s set, it’s time to get the adrenaline pumping and start removing all the excess water in your flooded basement.

It is advisable to you begin with the area that is most likely to sustain the most damage if the water sits. Another option is to start working with the highest section of the room where the water is at its lowest and work your way in to the larger pools of water.

If the rain has stopped already, open the windows to allow moisture in the air to escape. This will help with the drying out process and also prevents the proliferation of molds in your basement. Once the water has been removed from the flooded basement, it is now time to begin drying the area as completely and quickly as possible.

If your heating system is still well and good, turn the heat to a higher setting to help with the drying out process. Using heat will allow the water to evaporate into the air and the air in turn will become humid and dense with moisture.

Also consider using fans and dehumidifiers to circulate the air and speed up the drying process. Place them in such a way that the air is blown away and out rather than into the room. This will prevent the growth of mild and mildew.

However when using a dehumidifier for flooded basement operations keep in mind that windows and doors should be closed in order to ensure that it would work properly.

Keep a close eye on the dehumidifier’s holding container and empty it as frequently as necessary. Once the dehumidifier stops functioning or extracting moisture in the room, place it in another area of the basement and begin again.

If your heating system was damaged, make sure to call the help of a professional. Based on the gravity of your flooded basement, you may weigh things if you would seek a professional help and save yourself from all the time and hassle or save the money and tackle things on your own.
